Work on MCORE Projects 4 (Wright Street in Champaign) and 5 (Green Street in Urbana) is substantially complete as of December 2020. Small "punch list" items will be completed in Spring 2021. On Tuesday, July 7, the Multimodal Corridor Enhancement Project (MCORE) will begin reconstructing the northwest quadrant of the intersection of Wright Street and Green Street. Starting July 7, the intersection of Wright Street and Green Street will be closed to westbound through traffic to allow for the reconstruction of pavement in the intersection. Westbound Green Street traffic will be diverted north onto Wright Street and up to Springfield Avenue.
During this phase of construction, it is highly recommended that vehicles traveling westbound through campus seek alternate routes across Wright Street. The work will take several weeks to complete. The City of Champaign appreciates the cooperation and patience of property owners, residents, and visitors of the Campustown area during this important project. A public meeting for MCORE Project 5 will be held on Tuesday, May 12, 2020 from 4:00pm to 6:00pm to provide information and accept input from residents and community stakeholders. Exhibits, plans and aerial photography of the project area will be presented and project representatives will be available to discuss the
construction plans for the project and to answer any questions. City staff ask that any questions, concerns, or other input be provided in advance of this meeting so that project representatives may efficiently address any common items. The project is funded by a combination of local funds and state Motor Fuel Tax funds. MCORE Project 5 includes the complete reconstruction of Green Street from Busey Avenue to Race Street inUrbana, the replacement of all sidewalks and sidewalk ramps to improve accessibility for pedestrians, and enhanced transit features. This project also includes improvements to the City storm and sanitary sewer infrastructure and water main replacement within the project limits. Construction on Stage 1 of this project is currently underway. On Wednesday, April 1, 2020, the Multimodal Corridor Enhancement Project (MCORE) will begin reconstructing the intersection of Wright Street and Green Street, weather permitting.
Starting April 1, 2020 the intersection of Wright Street and Green Street will be closed to east-west through traffic to allow for the reconstruction of the pavement within the intersection. The alternate route for Green Street traffic traveling across Wright Street is to use Goodwin Avenue and Fourth Street to either Springfield Avenue or University Avenue. Some key pieces of information related to vehicle and pedestrian access at the intersection during this phase of the work are highlighted below: · Wright Street will be one-way SB between Green and John Streets. · EB traffic on Green Street will be required to turn either NB or SB onto Wright Street. · Pedestrian access will be maintained across Wright Street on either the north or south side of the intersection. In the interest of pedestrian safety, which side will change depending on the construction activities taking place. During this phase of construction, it is highly recommended that vehicles seek alternate routes when traveling through this area of campus. Access to businesses will be maintained during the construction. The work will take several weeks to complete. (Wright Street and Green Street) On Monday, March 16, 2020, the Multimodal Corridor Enhancement Project (MCORE) will begin construction on Wright Street from Green Street north to Springfield Avenue. During the week of March 16, 2020 to March 22, 2020 the intersection of Wright Street and Green Street will be closed to all traffic to facilitate the installation of water main. The intersection is anticipated to be re-opened by Monday morning, March 23. The alternate route for Green Street traffic traveling across Wright Street is to use Goodwin Avenue and Fourth Street to either Springfield Avenue or University Avenue. Work will also begin on the east half of Wright Street between Green Street and Springfield Avenue and continue throughout the spring semester. MCORE Project 4 – Traffic Pattern Changes and Closures (Wright Street, Chalmers Street, Daniel Street, John Street)
On Monday, September 23, the Multimodal Corridor Enhancement Project (MCORE) will change over from working on the east half of Wright Street to working on the west half of Wright Street. This will result in several traffic pattern changes. A few key items are highlighted below; please see the attached traffic pattern exhibit for more details. · John Street, Daniel Street and Chalmers Street will be closed to vehicular traffic at Wright Street. · Pedestrian access across Wright Street will be maintained at each location. · Wright Street will be one-way NB with traffic utilizing the new Wright Street pavement. · There will be new parking restrictions on John Street, Daniel Street, and Chalmers Street to allow access to buildings within the block between Sixth Street and Wright Street. During this phase of construction it is highly recommended that vehicles seek alternate routes when traveling through this area of campus. MCORE Project 4 - Closure of the West Leg of Chalmers Street at Wright Street
On Monday, August 26, 2019, the Multimodal Corridor Enhancement Project (MCORE) will close the west leg of Chalmers Street at Wright Street to reconstruct the western half of the intersection. Northbound Wright Street traffic will need to continue north on Wright Street. Eastbound Chalmers Street traffic will not have access to Wright Street. Work is expected to continue through mid-September. The City of Champaign appreciates the cooperation and patience of property owners, residents, and visitors of the Campustown area during this important project. Starting Monday, April 22, all sidewalk and pathway access north of the Main Library along Armory Avenue between 6th St and Wright St will be closed to all pedestrian traffic due to continuing MCORE Project 4 construction.
The site adjustment will remove Americans with Disabilities (ADA) route access to Library Room 66 from along Armory Ave. Accessible entry to the facility will remain available from ramps on the west side of the facility along the Main Quad. Reroutes along Chalmers Street and Gregory Drive are strongly recommended to avoid the work area. A map is available here. The full project corridor for MCORE Project 4 includes Armory Avenue (between Fourth Street and Wright Street) and Wright Street (between Armory Avenue and Springfield Avenue). Periodic construction updates will be posted on the Facilities & Services website. The work will occur in phases with the majority of construction south of Green Street scheduled this summer. Expected completion for the entire project is December 2020. On Monday, March 18, 2019, the Multimodal Corridor Enhancement Project (MCORE) will close the southern portion of the intersection of Sixth Street at Armory Avenue to facilitate the installation of water main and storm sewer. Sixth Street is anticipated to be reopened by Saturday, March 23.
Southbound Sixth Street traffic will need to turn left or right at Armory Avenue. Northbound Sixth Street will not have access to Armory Avenue. |
